Aimpoint CompM4s Red Dot Reflex Sight

Aimpoint CompM4/M4s Red Dot Reflex Sight (2021 Review)

The Aimpoint CompM4s Red Dot Reflex Sight is one of the best optics that you will find, though it does have some small, potential downsides for some.  I recently got it for my IWI X95, and wanted to get the best for what I consider my SHTF gun.

So, in this review, we’ll tackle all of the sight’s pros, as well as the cons (all two of them), along with our bottom line.

Our Review

Put simply, the Aimpoint CompM4 and/or M4s is possibly the best firearm optics on the market right now. It is widely considered to be the best sight that has ever been made, though the quality does come with a price tag

This red dot is highly valued. Since 1997, the US military have been using the Aimpoint Comp line, and the Comp M4 is the latest in a great line of optics.

Though not originally available to the public, that quickly changed and this red dot has skyrocketed in popularity ever since.

The sight will work with a gun of any caliber, and it is one of the most sturdy sights you will find.

It has a 2 MOA red dot, which is great for distance, though you will find it loses effectiveness after a couple hundred yards.

The CompM4 series is available in two versions:

  • The CompM4s, which has a lower battery compartment

  • The CompM4, with a larger battery compartment

In all other ways, the two sights are identical. It just depends on the weight and battery life that you want. That said, the battery life on this red dot is extremely effective, enough that you don’t necessarily need the extra battery compartment.

The Good

There’s a lot of good things to say about this red dot sight. Let's dive into each one.

Durability

This optic is extremely sturdy and durable. You will find it has no trouble with recoil, even from the more high-caliber firearms.

The Aimpoint Comp M4 is designed so that you could literally freeze it in ice, or leave it out in the elements for days, and it would work fine the next day. It is fully shockproof, fog-proof, waterproof, and you can place it in up to 150 feet of water without any problem.

Night-vision

The CompM4/M4s has full night vision capability, with seven different settings, making it excellent for hunting, law enforcement and in the military.

It is ideal for 3rd generation NVDs, but it will work with all generations.

The sight also has nine settings for use during the day in various brightness, including one extra-bright setting.

In short, you can use it at any time of the day.

Battery Life

One of the best features of the Aimpoint M4 is the battery life. According to Aimpoint, it can run for 8 years of continuous use on one AA battery.

Naturally, this is difficult to test due to the longevity of the sight.

Using AAs is great, because it adds convenience to the mix. But generally speaking, the battery for your Aimpoint CompM4 will rarely need to be replaced.

Easy to Use

We found that the optic is very easy to attach to the gun with the mount, which is integral so you don’t need a separate ring.

You can also easily customize it with vertical and forward spacers, so it will fit a wide variety of weapons.

It comes with the QRP2 mount and an AR15 spacer, and other mounts are available.

We thought the controls were also easy to use, with a simple dial you turn to adjust the brightness levels and turn it on.

Precise

The Aimpoint CompM4s sight is designed with precision in mind, particularly when it comes to rapidly acquiring and zeroing in on targets.

The red dot is easy to see and extremely helpful at short to mid-range distances. It will start to be less useful at distances beyond 200 yards.

Clarity

The red dot sight comes with a special coating that reflects the dot’s specific frequency of light, so it appears extremely bright, even at long distances.

We found the image to be very clear, especially with a NVD.

Warranty

If any of that wasn’t enough for you, the M4 comes with a lifetime warranty, making this really more of an investment. While the Comp M4 prices are a bit steep, you will essentially never need to buy another one again.

Then again, you’re not likely to break it anyway, given the product’s great durability.

The Bad

There really isn’t much to say on the negative side. This really is one of the best sights on the market. However, there are two points to touch on.

The Price

This red dot sight is not cheap, when compared to other red do sights. It will run you upwards of $900 when included with the mount, and you’ll probably want it with the mount.

Then again, you pay for what you get. If you want quality, you’ll pay for it, but this is absolutely worth it.

The Weight

Overall, when compared to Aimpoint Pro or other red dot sights, the CompM4 sight does run a little on the heavy side. It comes in at 9.4 oz. which can be a lot when combined with the weight of the gun.

That said, this is not a huge issue, as the benefits far outweigh this small gripe.

The Bottom Line

Though expensive, there’s a reason why the military, NATO, and police forces all throughout the US make use of the Aimpoint CompM4 series sights. Everything from the night vision compatibility, to the red dot features, to being one of the toughest sights out there, this Aimpoint optic cannot be criticized for quality.

Now, if only there was a good red dot to fit my sig p365 ccw pistol that I love as much as the Aimpoint.  Of course, that will mean I have to find a good holster for it.

In short, this is one of the finest sights Aimpoint has ever delivered.
